Alfred Büchi (born July 11, 1879 in Winterthur ; † October 27, 1959 there ) was a Swiss engineer and national councilor of the LdU .

Life

Today Alfred Büchi is considered to be the founder of exhaust gas turbocharging technology. He invented the turbocharger and applied for a patent for his invention. The German Reich granted him the patent with the number 204630 in 1905. Büchi noticed that conventional internal combustion engines were poorly efficient because two thirds of the energy was lost unused as heat with the exhaust gas flow. Büchi came up with the idea of using the existing energy in the exhaust gas (heat and kinetic energy) to drive a turbine . The turbine in turn drives a compressor that pre-compresses the sucked in air. In 1925 he achieved an increase in performance of over 40% with this method. From 1909 he was employed as chief engineer at Sulzer in Winterthur for six years . There he further developed the turbocharger for marine diesel engines .

In 1938 he received from the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich the title Dr. hc awarded.

From 1939 to 1943 he was a member of the Landesring faction on the National Council.

Büchi was buried in the Rosenberg cemetery in Winterthur .
