Pschyrembel (Medical Dictionary)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pschyrembel [ pʃyˈʁɛmbl̩ ] is a brand for medical reference works published by Walter de Gruyter in Berlin. The name refers to the gynecologist Willibald Pschyrembel (1901–1987), who was in charge of the publishing house 's clinical dictionary founded by Otto Dornblüth . This dictionary is an alphabetical index of the most common and important medical terms. It was specially designed for the medical professions. In the German-speaking world, “the Pschyrembel” gained a meaning for medical linguistic usage just as the Duden has for general German.

Pschyrembel Clinical Dictionary

The history of the Pschyrembel began with the dictionary of clinical art expressions (“For students and doctors”) by the Freiburg physician Otto Dornblüth , which was first published in 1894 by Veit & Comp., Leipzig. This publishing house was one of the five founding companies of the Walter de Gruyter publishing house, which has been publishing the Pschyrembel ever since. From 1931 to 1982 the Berlin gynecologist and university professor Willibald Pschyrembel took over the editing . 17 named specialists participated in the 185th to 250th edition. Christoph Zink (* 1951) is one of the other editors. Martina Bach got the 261st edition. The current edition of 267 appeared on September 1, 2017. In addition to the printed book version, an online version (for a fee) and versions for Windows Mobile , iOS and Android are also available.

One oddity is the Pschyrembel the fictitious encyclopedia article on the of Loriot invented Steinlaus : Initially one of the editorial joke in the 255th and 256th edition, which then removed again in the 257th edition but used, as a result of many readers demands from the 258th edition again the entry now has a large fan base and has its own weblog.
