Original edition

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the book trade , the original edition , or OA for short , is any edition that appears on the German and foreign book market for the first time. An original edition, unlike z. B. a first edition , only give once worldwide.

In the case of an original edition , unlike a licensed edition , a book publisher acquires the rights to a work by concluding an original publishing contract against payment of a fee directly from the author or another rights holder or through an intermediary, e.g. B. a literary agency. The publisher, as the owner of the original rights, which often also includes ancillary rights worldwide, can act as a licensor to third parties.

In the German-speaking book market, it is not customary to mark bound books as the original edition ; it is almost always used for paperbacks . The number of original editions at classic paperback publishers is constantly increasing. The publishers acquire first rights and sell licenses, just like hardcover publishers. This also makes the edition more expensive, since production, editing, press work, sales and advertising are all faced with the same tasks as hardcover publishers .
