After further training at the University of Tübingen to become a secondary school teacher from 1841–43 with subsequent different places of work, from 1845 he came to the elementary school in Stuttgart. He became its director, and he was also given responsibility for the commercial training school in Stuttgart. In 1857 he received his doctorate in Tübingen for Dr. phil. From 1862 to 1885 he worked as a professor and later as its head at the Upper Stuttgart Realschule.
Johann Georg Fischer developed into a celebrated poet and dramatist during his time in Stuttgart. His 24 speeches on Friedrich Schiller's birthdays made him particularly popular. The town of Marbach am Neckar made him an honorary citizen for his services to the establishment of the local Schiller National Museum , the renovation of Schiller's birthplace and the erection of the Schiller monument in 1876 . Stuttgart celebrated its seventieth birthday like a folk festival.
He also received honorary citizenship in his hometown.
Johann Georg Fischer died in high honor on May 4th, 1897 at the age of 80 in Stuttgart. His resting place in the Prague cemetery is listed.

- In 1900 a bronze bust was erected in Stuttgart-West as a memorial by Professor Emil Kiemlen (cast: Paul Stotz ) for the poet (at the end of the green area in the lower Hasenbergsteige , at the height of the house Hasenbergsteige 17, coordinates: 48.76748 ° N , 9 , 161353 ° O ).
- A memorial at the school named after him reminds of him in Süßen.
Fischer's son from his first marriage is the Germanist Hermann Fischer . One of the poet's grandsons is the pathologist Walther Fischer .
Fischer's birthplace in Süßen was badly damaged in a fire on July 16, 2000. This prompted the city administration and the local council to have the building demolished, as the monument office did not have any concerns and the building had already been changed several times in its original form.
