Calamine (English, say, kæləˌmaɪn ) is provided with a small amount of iron oxide (III) colored zinc oxide powder . The mixture is used in cosmetics as well as medicinally in preparations for the skin.

Zinc oxide has a contracting ( astringent ), drying and slightly antiseptic effect . In addition, the covering effect is cosmetically significant. The coloring with iron (III) oxide is used to tint the skin. "Calamine Lotion" is a lotion comparable to the zinc oxide shaking mixture and has been classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an indispensable drug for the treatment of itching .

According to the specification in the US Pharmacopoeia (USP), Calamine USP contains at least 98.0% zinc oxide (ZnO). The USP also describes a recipe for a calamine-containing lotio ( Calamine Lotion USP ). The Calamine BP listed in the British Pharmacopoeia (BP), on the other hand, is defined as basic zinc carbonate (2 ZnCO 3 · 3 Zn (OH) 2 ) colored with iron (III) oxide . Basic zinc carbonate has similar application properties as zinc oxide. The BP also describes various calamine preparations ( cream , ointment , lotio ) for use on the skin.
