Diloxanide furoate is a medicine used to treat amoebic dysentery , a diarrheal disease caused by a specific microorganism. The substance acts as a contact amebicide in the intestinal lumen and is the agent of choice for symptom-free infections of the intestinal lumen and for follow-up treatment following therapy for invasive infections caused by amoeba.

Diloxanide furoate has been on the World Health Organization's list of Essential Medicines since 1988 . The drug was discovered by The Boots Company Plc in 1956 and marketed as a drug under the name Furamid . Abbott Laboratories now owns the trademark rights.

Diloxanide furoate is an ester of furan-2-carboxylic acid with diloxanide.
