Otto Rudolf Schatz
Otto Rudolf Schatz (born January 18, 1900 in Vienna ; † April 26, 1961 there ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist.
Life
The son of a family of civil servants graduated from the Vienna School of Applied Arts with Oskar Strnad and Anton von Kenner . At the age of 22, the artist, who was active on the political left, appeared as a book illustrator for Arthur Roessler , and later also for Josef Luitpold Stern (The uprooted tree, The new city, The return of Prometheus). In the interwar period, Schatz mainly illustrated literature from the Strom publishing house (including Stefan Zweig , Jack London , as well as Upton Sinclair's “Co-op” and Peter Rosegger's “Jacob the Last”).
In 1925 Schatz received the Grand State Prize, from 1928–38 he was a member of the Hagenbund . During the Second World War, Schatz lived in Brno, Prague and was later admitted to a subcamp of the Groß-Rosen concentration camp in Gräditz , as he was considered to be " Jewish " because of his marriage . After his return, Schatz was sponsored by the Vienna City Councilor for Culture Viktor Matejka . His first prize for the design of the Vienna Westbahnhof remained unrealized.
Schatz worked mainly as a wood cutter - more than 1500 motifs have survived. Oil paintings and occasionally erotica also appear in stores. After his death, Wilfried Daim appeared as collector and propagator of the artist . Daim also reconstructed the wood prints made between 1926 and 1929 for Ernst Preczang's poem "Voice of Work" and edited the book in 1999 as a facsimile.
The honorary grave of Otto Rudolf Schatz is located at the Neustift cemetery in Vienna.
