Strom-Verlag
The current-Verlag (Vienna) was a commercially oriented, but moderate left enthusiastic Austrian publishing house of the interwar period.
The publishing history was short but eventful: In April 1929 the Budapest director of Phaidon Publishing , Béla Horovitz (1898–1955), founded the “Strom-Verlag” together with the writer and lawyer Július Hajdu (1886–1973). The registered office of Verlags-Ges.mbH was Vienna IV., Argentinierstraße 29. One of the managing directors of Phaidon-Verlag, Ludwig Goldscheider (1896–1973) , acted as authorized signatory .
The business idea of the publishing house consisted in the production of novels by respected writers in popular magazine form. The "Roman-Rundschau" under the editor Ludwig Goldscheider, later Oskar Maurus Fontana (1889–1969), served as the medium . Contemporary bestselling authors such as Bernhard Kellermann , HG Wells , Stefan Zweig , Jack London , Arthur Schnitzler , Upton Sinclair , Jakob Wassermann , Sinclair Lewis , Gustav Meyrink and Lion Feuchtwanger with smaller works were planned for the first twelve planned issues of the Roman-Rundschau .
Ten of the twelve titles were able to appear, mostly with illustrations by Otto Rudolf Schatz . However, the publishing activities soon had to be stopped for legal reasons. The publishing historian Murray G. Hall suspects that the motive for the revocation of the magazine character according to § 2 paragraph 2 of the Austrian press law is reasons of envy and competition. One and a half years after the start of the company, the liquidation of the company had to be decided on December 10, 1930. In mid-June 1931, Strom-Verlag Ges.mbH was deleted from the commercial register.
