Murray G. Hall

Murray Gordon Hall (born May 25, 1947 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Germanist and associate professor for modern German literature at the University of Vienna .

Life

Hall studied German at the University of Vienna from 1972 . In 1975 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on "Animals and animal motifs in the prose work of Robert Musils " . In the summer of 1974 he was one of the organizers of a large Robert Musil permanent exhibition in the Austrian National Library . He became a board member of the "International Robert Musil Society" . He also dealt intensively with the history of Austrian publishing. His two-volume treatise on this subject (1985) is considered a standard work. In 1987 Hall completed his habilitation and since then has held numerous lectures and seminars at the German Institute of the University of Vienna.

Since May 1977 (since July 1995 as an employee) Murray G. Hall worked as an editor at ORF , Radio Austria International. He left ORF at the end of May 2009. On December 11, 2002, he was awarded the “Golden Decoration of Honor for the Services of the State of Vienna” . He was the editor of the catalog for the exhibition “Stolen Books” , which took place from December 10, 2004 to February 27, 2005 in the Austrian National Library. Since 2006 Hall has been chairman of the “Society for Book Research in Austria” and co-editor of the publication series “Buchforschung. Contributions to the book system in Austria ”.

In the summer semester of 2009 and 2010, Hall taught as a visiting professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In the summer semester 2011 he taught at the Alpen-Adria-Universität in Klagenfurt, in the summer semester 2012 at the University of Salzburg and at the University of Klagenfurt.

Hall is a scientific adviser to the “Austrian Society for Children's and Young Adult Literature Research” (ÖG-KJLF).
