Arthur Roessler (born February 20, 1877 in Vienna ; † July 20, 1955 there ) was an Austrian art writer and art critic .

Life

Arthur Roessler studies philosophy, literature and art history under Franz Wickhoff at the University of Vienna , but did not receive a doctorate . He then traveled to Germany, France, England and Italy. He settled in Munich , where he worked as a journalist for the Münchner Zeitung. First novellas and essays , such as The Mood of the Gothic (1903), combine lyrical sensitivity and linguistic sophistication and reveal the brilliant stylist for whom he was later appreciated. With a book about Adolf Hölzel and the Dachau artist colony (Neu-Dachau artist group), he turned to contemporary painting in 1905. In the same year he moved to Vienna to take over the management of the Miethke gallery for one year through the mediation of Adolf Hölzel . He subsequently published several monographs by 19th century Austrian painters, including Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller , Rudolf von Alt and Josef Danhauser . He worked as an editor for several art magazines and as an art consultant at Victor Adler's request for the social democratic workers' newspaper and for the Wiener Neusten Nachrichten . In doing so, he recognized the importance of young talent with a sure feeling, for which he then actively campaigned journalistically and often through personal support. Above all, he discovered and promoted Egon Schiele . Even if the relationship was not always unclouded, Roessler provided his protégé with decisive suggestions and contacts and eagerly collected his works himself. After Schiele's death, he published several, albeit subjectively, edited volumes of memories.

In the interwar period, Roessler continued his work as a publicist, publisher, exhibition organizer and functionary in cultural organizations. He was vice-president of the Wiener Werkstätten and president of the Austrian Werkbund .

During the Nazi era, Roessler , who was considered a "half-breed" according to the Nuremberg Laws, had to struggle with difficulties. Among other things, several hundred letters from Rudolf von Alt were confiscated from him. His literary work is an important contribution less to art history than to the artistic history of Austrian modernism.

Ida Roessler (Schiele, 1912)

Roessler was married to Ida Roessler, who translated Oscar Wilde's Ghost of Canterville . In addition to Schiele, she was also portrayed by Anton Faistauer , Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel and Viktor Tischler.

His grave is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 30C, Row 1, No. 11).
