August von Pettenkofen
August Xaver Karl Ritter von Pettenkofen (born May 10, 1822 in Vienna ; † March 21, 1889 there ) was an Austrian painter , lithographer , illustrator and caricaturist .
Life
August von Pettenkofen was the son of the large landowner and trader Anton Pettenkofen and his wife Maria Anna von Nespern. After the death of his father, August von Pettenkofen grew up in Vienna with his cousin and later poet Ferdinand von Saar . In 1834 he entered the Vienna Academy , became a student of Leopold Kupelwieser and later also of Franz Eybl . During this time he dealt with the typical genre painting of the Viennese Biedermeier period .
From 1841 to 1843 he did his military service and in 1848 he became an illustrator of Austrian war reporting under the influence of Carl Schindler . In the course of this activity he came to the Hungarian town of Szolnok . This stay became a key experience for the artist, described as shy of people, as it led him to a new kind of painterly conception. In 1852 he traveled to Paris, where he came into contact with the landscape painting of the Barbizon School . In 1866 Pettenkofen was admitted to the Vienna Academy, in 1872 he became an honorary member of the Munich Academy . Pettenkofen, whose works were highly valued during his lifetime, was knighted in 1876. Between 1870 and 1880 he traveled to Venice almost annually. In 1889 he died in the Loew sanatorium in his native Vienna. In the same year the Pettenkofengasse was named in honor of the artist in Wien- Landstrasse . In 1893 he was given a joint grave of honor with Leopold Carl Müller at the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 14 A, number 29), which was designed by Viktor Tilgner .

August von Pettenkofen was one of the greatest Biedermeier genre painters in the monarchy . In addition to scenes from Viennese folk life, he created numerous small-format soldiers and village scenes. Representations of Hungarian and Slovak markets, farms and wagons are particularly typical. He founded the Szolnok School of Painting , a painting colony in the Hungarian town of Szolnok. Thanks to the special lighting conditions there, he created interesting landscapes that had a lasting influence on Austrian landscape painting .
