Franz Eybl (born April 1, 1806 in Vienna ; † April 29, 1880 there ) was an Austrian painter and lithographer .

Life

Franz Eybl was born in the Viennese suburb of Gumpendorf , Große Steingasse 136 (today Stumpergasse 55). In 1816, at the age of ten, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. There he was first with Josef Klieber in the ore intersection and art professional school, then in 1817 with Josef Mössmer in the landscape class . From 1820 to 1823 he took model drawing according to antiquity with Johann Baptist Lampi and Franz Caucig (1755–1828), before finally completing the history painting class with Johann Peter Krafft until 1828 . In 1825 Eybl received the Gundel Prize and in 1828 the Lampi Prize . In 1830 he married Antonia Jordan. From 1843 Eybl was a member of the Vienna Academy, from 1853 curator at the Imperial Picture Gallery in the Belvedere , from 1867 also a teacher at the local restoration workshop. Franz Eybl died in his official apartment in Belvedere Palace . He was buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 17 C, Row 1, No. 6). In 1933 the Eyblweg in Vienna- Leopoldau was named after the artist.

power

Franz Eybl initially devoted himself to landscape and genre painting as well as history painting , mostly looking for his subjects from the rural world. After 1840 he came increasingly under the influence of Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller , whose lighting effects he took up. Eybl's greatest importance, however, lies in his portraits , in which he is one of the most important portrait painters of the 19th century in Austria alongside Friedrich von Amerling . In addition to numerous oil paintings , he also created over 400 portrait lithographs and can be compared to Josef Kriehuber in this subject . With this he contributed to the great boom and artistic heyday of Viennese portrait lithography in the years 1830–1860.
