Paul Simon Jonas (born September 28, 1850 in Berlin , † February 11, 1916 in Charlottenburg ) was a lawyer and notary and founding member of the theater association Freie Bühne .

Life

Jonas came from a Jewish family, his father was the doctor Michael Jonas, his mother Lina Jonas, nee. Bohm. Paul Jonas was married to Klara Maria Kahn (born June 29, 1863 in Mannheim ; † January 17, 1922 in Berlin), the daughter of the Mannheim industrialist and banker Bernhard Kahn , and his wife Emma, ​​nee. Eberstadt. The Jonas couple had three children. Among them was the daughter Eva Jonas (1888-1983), who was married to Hans Prinzhorn in her first marriage from 1909 to 1912 , to the psychoanalyst Hellmuth Kaiser in her second marriage from 1915 to 1927 and to Friedrich Kessler in her third marriage . The family lived at Taubenstrasse 16 in Berlin.

As the syndic of AEG , whose co-founder Felix Deutsch was married to Klara's sister Elisabeth "Lili" Kahn, Paul Simon Jonas was a member of the board.

He was a friend and lawyer of Gerhart Hauptmann and represented him in court during his divorce. They had known each other since 1896, and Hauptmann often wrote about him in his diaries. Hauptmann often read from his latest works in the Jonas house.

Since 1889 Paul Simon Jonas was a founding member, deputy chairman and legal advisor of the theater association Freie Bühne in Berlin, as well as the syndic of the German theater.

Otto Brahm had staged world premieres of Gerhart Hauptmann's dramas on these stages . Jonas negotiated the contracts between his two friends and many other artists over a period of 20 years. Paul Simon Jonas was a cousin of the playwright Georg Hirschfeld , whose works were also performed on these stages.

Paul Simon Jonas is buried in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee .
