Josef Klieber
Joseph Klieber (born November 1, 1773 at Ambras Castle , Tyrol ; † January 11, 1850 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor and painter .
Life
Josef Klieber was the son of the sculptor Urban Klieber . In 1785 he attended the drawing school in Innsbruck before moving to Vienna in 1792 . After initial difficulties, he was able to begin an apprenticeship with the sculptor Johann Baptist Straub . When Johann Martin Fischer , he also learned the casting technique . Klieber was already working for Prince Johannes Liechtenstein before 1810 , for whom he produced a large number of various architectural sculptures for his possessions in Vienna and the surrounding area. As a result of this, Klieber was appointed Privy Councilor and provisional director of the engraving and ore cutting school of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1814 , and a year later he was appointed director, who he remained until 1845. Klieber received the Great Gold Civil Medal and other awards. He died in 1850 in the Viennese suburb of Wieden No. 923 (today Kettenbrückengasse 3) and was later given a grave of honor at the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 0, row 1, number 53) . In 1879 the Kliebergasse was named after him, as was the Klieberpark or the Kliebergasse in Perchtoldsdorf .
His son Eduard Klieber (1803–1879) was a Viennese painter and lithographer, the grandson of the well-known Viennese painter Carl Goebel (1824–1899).
power
Josef Klieber was one of the most important sculptors in Vienna in the first half of the 19th century . Through his numerous works on buildings, for which he was often drawn, he shaped the image of pre-March Vienna. He preferred sandstone as a material . In contrast to his compatriot Franz Anton Zauner , Klieber's work was characterized by greater realism .
