The parish church of St. Agidius is a Roman Catholic church in Gumpendorf in the 6th Viennese district Mariahilf . The free-standing church is located in the formerly independent suburb of Gumpendorf. Set back from Gumpendorfer Straße, it forms a small square with Brückengasse and stands at the end of the visual axis of Stumpergasse.

history

Elevated to a parish in 1239, a Romanesque chapel on a Roman watchtower was documented in 1244. Ulrich II von Kapellen had a Romanesque nave built from 1293, which his grandson Eberhard I von Kapellen had a Gothic choir extended in 1351. In 1360 the parish church was incorporated into the Cistercian Baumgartenberg monastery. It was damaged in 1529 and 1683, incorporated into the Schottenstift in 1678 and rebuilt by 1700. After the tower had been demolished, a new church was built a little further north from 1765 to 1770 according to the plans of master builder Franz Sebastian Rosenstingl . In 1772 the old Romanesque nave was demolished and in 1792 the current church tower was built by the builder Josef Reymund . In 1807 the choir was added to the west by master builder Ernst Koch , and in 1908 the organ choir was enlarged. The Church has been led by the Eucharist since 1946 .

inside view

The facade is designed with a large Ionic order of pilasters over a high base; the side and choir fronts have a frame structure, arched windows and ox eyes. In front is the central projecting facade tower with a swinging front and Welscher hood as well as stone figures of Saints Joseph and Leopold. The choir tower is crowned by an onion helmet. Roman inscription stones from the time of Emperor Trajan are embedded in the base of the western front . - The interior consists of the three-bay main room, which is designed to be centralized by emphasizing the central bay and bevelling the western and eastern yoke edges, as well as the recessed rectangular choir. The facility includes pictures by Martin Johann Schmidt .

organ

The organ is in the choir and was built in 1987 by the organ builder Herbert Gollini . The slider chest instrument has 13 stops on two manuals and a pedal. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
