Josef Anton Strassgschwandtner

Josef Anton Strassgschwandtner (born October 17, 1826 in Vienna ; † May 3, 1881 , also: Tony Strassgschwandtner ) was an Austrian horse , military, hunting and genre painter and lithographer .

Life

In the years 1843/45 Strassgschwandtner was a student at the Vienna Academy under Leopold Kupelwieser and Franz Steinfeld , but was also influenced by August von Pettenkofen , Carl Schindler and the contemporary French military lithographers. He was also called the "Austrian Raffet" (after the French lithographer Denis-August-Marie Raffet (1804-1860)).

Strassgschwandtner mainly painted military and hunting scenes. He enjoyed great popularity among his clients, which included private individuals, hunting associations, horse lovers, but also the Austro-Hungarian army , and was accordingly productive. In 1879 the painter fell into mental derangement, and two years later he died in his hometown of Vienna.

The since 1889 eponymous Strasbourg Gschwandtner street located in the 14th Vienna district Penzing between the Hütteldorferstraße and Dreyhausenstraße.
