Ferdinand Ludwig Adam von Saar (born September 30, 1833 in Vienna ; † July 24, 1906 in Vienna-Döbling ) was an Austrian writer , playwright and poet .

Life

Ferdinand Saar came from a family of officials ennobled in 1793 . However, the father died shortly after Ferdinand was born. The mother moved back to her parents' house, where Saar was brought up together with his cousin, who later became visual artist August von Pettenkofen . He attended elementary school in Vienna, then the Scots' city school and, from 1843, their grammar school . In 1849 he joined the army and in 1854 became a lieutenant . In 1860 he finished his officer career to devote himself to literature. However, high debts from his military service led to several prison terms in the following years. In 1871 he was freed from the most pressing need by noble patrons. In 1877 the novellas from Austria gained broader recognition. The Vienna Elegies in 1893 became the greatest public success . Saar had been awarded the Franz Joseph Order three years earlier, and in 1902 he became a member of the manor house of the Austrian Imperial Council.

The last few years have been characterized by illness and especially severe depression . After his marriage had tragically failed in 1884 with his wife's suicide , he also ended his own life in 1906 (house where he died: Rudolfinergasse  6, Unterdöbling ).

Along with Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Saar is one of the most important realistic storytellers in Austrian literature at the end of the 19th century. His works are characterized by humanistic ethos and social criticism .
