The Excellency is a framework story by Ferdinand von Saar from 1882 .

A retired civil servant, an Excellency, as his title is, moves into the narrator's house. The frame narrator visits the lonely; who tells him his life story. Not long after this evening the Excellency dies.

Internal narration

At the beginning of his civil servant career, the Excellency met a young girl while visiting church. He finally dares to ask her on a rendezvous. They meet in the park. However, since both are quite reserved and are afraid of embarrassing each other, the conversation does not take the direction they want. They break up. Many years later, the Excellency met the woman again. She is doing badly, she is unhappily married. She now confesses to him that she loved him then. But now it is too late. A short time later she dies.
