Life

The daughter of the banker Leopold von Wertheimstein and his wife Josephine von Wertheimstein , née Gomperz , had Dr. Eduard Wessel as an educator. In 1876 her father bought the house in Döbling , now known as Villa Wertheimstein, from Rudolf von Arthaber's heirs , in which Franziska, as a salon lady, gathered a stimulating circle of friends around her. Ferdinand von Saar belonged to the closest circle . Franziska von Wertheimstein was known for her charity and helpfulness, which, however, was sometimes abused.

In 1906 Franziska showed symptoms of an incipient mental illness and died six months later , being looked after by her doctor Josef Breuer . In her will, she bequeathed the house and garden to the municipality of Vienna “for the good of the population”. Today the Döbling District Museum is housed in the Villa Wertheimstein ( Döblinger Hauptstraße 96), and the garden has become the public Wertheimstein Park.

Franziska von Wertheimstein is buried in the Israelite department of the Döblinger Friedhof (group I1, row G1, number 1).
