The aim of the Werkbund movement was the interaction of the fine arts, architecture and handicrafts as well as the promotion of quality craftsmanship.

history

The founding meeting took place on April 30, 1913. The first president was Adolf Bachofen von Echt (1864–1913). One of the co-founders of the ÖWB was Josef Hoffmann , who only belonged to the ÖWB until 1920. He built the Austrian House at the great Cologne Werkbund exhibition in 1914, where the ÖWB exhibited for the first time. After the First World War in 1918, the ÖWB was committed to social housing in Vienna. In 1920 there was a tendency to split and the “Werkbund Wien”, in which Josef Frank participated, and in 1923 the Steiermärkische Werkbund was formed . In 1928 the reunification with the "Wiener Werkbund" took place. From 1930 to 1932 the “ Werkbundsiedlung Wien ” was built, managed by Josef Frank. In 1934 there was another split.
