Hans Boehler

Hans Böhler , also Boehler (born September 11, 1884 in Vienna ; † September 17, 1961 there ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .

Life

Böhler attended the Jaschke private painting school in Vienna. In 1904 he passed the entrance exam at the Vienna Art Academy , but decided not to be accepted and preferred to stay at the private painting school. In 1908 he took part in the spring exhibition of the Vienna Secession . In 1909 he exhibited with the Neukunstgruppe in the Salon Pisko .

In the years 1910–1911 Böhler traveled to Russia , Siberia , China , Japan and India ; 1913–1914 to South and North America . He then worked in Germany , Switzerland , Italy , Belgium , Holland , Spain , England , Denmark , Norway and Africa . From 1918 to 1923 he stayed in Ticino and had his residence in Niederwil (Solothurn).

Böhler was a close friend of Josef Hoffmann , who set up his studio for him in Vienna. From 1920 he exhibited at the Vienna Secession. In 1928 he became a member of the Austrian Werkbund , for which he designed postcards.

Böhler lived in the USA from 1936 to 1950 . Then he returned to Vienna. In 1954 he received the City of Vienna Prize for Painting and Graphics and the title of Professor .

Works

Böhler mainly created expressionist, brightly colored depictions of people , but also landscapes and precisely contoured nude drawings . An extensive collection of his works is in the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
