Otto Breicha

Otto Breicha (born July 26, 1932 in Vienna ; † December 28, 2003 ibid) was an Austrian art historian , publicist and museum director.

Life

Breicha studied art history, theater studies and German studies in Vienna and received his doctorate in 1961. phil., before he was an employee and deputy head of the Austrian Society for Literature until 1972 . Between 1969 and 1974 he was also a member of the board of directors of the avant-garde festival “ Steirischer Herbst ”. In 1966 he founded the literary journal Protocols together with the writer Gerhard Fritsch , which he ran until it was closed in 1997. Breicha gave the first edition of Hertha Kräftner's worksout. From 1962 to 1970 Breicha worked as a critic for the Viennese daily newspaper "Kurier" and in the following years was mainly active in Graz and Salzburg. From 1969 to 1974 he was editor of the literary and art magazine Ver Sacrum with Georg Eisler and Hilde Spiel . From 1972 to 1980 he headed the Kulturhaus of the City of Graz, from 1980 he was director of the “Austrian Photo Gallery Rupertinum ” in Salzburg, which he had co-founded. Breicha was also the author of art monographs, for example on Wolfgang Hutter (1969), Andreas Judgment (1970), Georg Eisler (1970), Arnulf Rainer (1972), Peter Pongratz (1975), Fritz Wotruba (1977) and Wolfgang Herzig (1995) .

Breicha was considered an important figure in the Austrian art and literature scene in the sixties. As a director at the Rupertinum he collected, among others, Kurt Moldovan , Günter Brus , Fritz Wotruba, Gotthard Muhr . He edited portfolio works by Karl Anton Fleck, Gotthard Muhr, Peter Pongratz, Alois Riedl, Karl Rössing , Johannes Wanke , Max Weiler and many others.

Breicha built up an important photo collection in the Rupertinum. He also took author photos himself, especially during his work in the Austrian Society for Literature from 1962 to 1972.

The Otto Breicha Prize for Photo Art is named after him. This was awarded every two years from 1983 to 2001 and revived in 2007.
