Georg Eisler
Georg Eisler (born April 20, 1928 in Vienna ; † January 15, 1998 there ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .
Life
Georg Eisler, son of the composer Hanns Eisler and the singer Charlotte Eisler , spent the first years in Vienna during the " interwar period " until he emigrated in 1936. He then lived with his mother in Moscow and Prague before they both moved on to England in 1939 . There he studied art at the Stockport School of Art and the Manchester Academy. In 1944 he met Oskar Kokoschka in London and was tutored by him. In 1946 Eisler returned to Vienna.
In 1961 he designed the set and costumes for Otto Klemperer's production of The Magic Flute at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden , London. In 1966 he married Alice Gerson. From 1968 to 1972 he was President of the Vienna Secession . In 1972 Eisler completed a study visit of several months at the Austrian cultural institute in Rome . In 1976 he traveled to the United States for the first time and gave lectures at the University of Southern California and the University of New Mexico . From 1981 he led classes at the Salzburg Summer Academy (drawing and painting). That year he also lectured at Stanford University in California. In 1987 he became a visiting professor at the Berlin University of the Arts . Further visiting professorships followed in 1990 and 1991 at the University of the Arts in Hamburg . In 1998 Eisler died in Vienna. He was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery .

Georg Eisler was an important painter of the 20th century, who stood out particularly through his portraits of famous artists and intellectuals. The people he painted include: Erich Fried , Hilde Spiel , Georg Lukács and many more. His pictures hang around the world in the most important collections such as the Albertina in Vienna or the Uffizi in Florence as well as the National Portrait Gallery in London and the British Museum . In addition, he has always captured the everyday with his very unmistakable style and illustrated numerous books.
