Museum of Modern Art (Passau)
The Museum of Modern Art - Foundation Wörlen Passau is an art museum in the old town of Passau , which was founded in 1990 as a museum of the foundation of the architect and art patron Hanns Egon Wörlen . It sees itself as a forum for modern and contemporary art at the gateway to Eastern Europe and has set itself the goal of bringing East and West closer together.
collection
The basis of the collection is the work of the painter Georg Philipp Wörlen (1886 to 1954), the father of the museum's founder, and works by his artist friends from communities such as the “ Wiener Hagenbund ”, “ Der Fels ” and the “ Donau-Wald-Gruppe ”. New acquisitions and donations from contemporary artists - with a focus on works of Expressionism and New Objectivity - continually complement and expand the inventory. The museum's collection currently (2006) includes around 2,000 works.
Exhibitions
There are changing solo and group exhibitions by international artists from the 20th and early 21st centuries such as Lyonel Feininger , Keith Haring , Jiří Kolář , Egon Schiele , Antoni Tàpies , Eduardo Chillida , Salvador Dalí , Franz West , Max Beckmann , Pablo Picasso , Yoko Ono , Christo and Jeanne-Claude , Horst Janssen , Jürgen Klauke , Rudolf Klaffenböck and Yves Klein . With around 15 changing exhibitions every year and a diverse art education and event program, the museum represents a place where modern and contemporary artist positions can be examined. The spectrum of the exhibition program encompasses all genres of art and ranges from classical modernism to “art informel” tendencies to the pluralism of styles and media in contemporary art. A special focus is on art from Austria and neighboring Eastern European countries such as the Czech Republic , Slovakia and Hungary .
Museum management
The first director was Gerwald Sonnenberger. From September 2003 to June 2007, Hans-Peter Wipplinger managed the museum. His recall received critical comments. In January 2008, Josephine Gabler , who has a doctorate in art history, took over the management, who took over the management of the Käthe Kollwitz Museum in Berlin on April 1, 2018 . Marion Bornscheuer , who has a doctorate in art history and was previously curator at the Wilhelm-Lehmbruck-Museum , has been heading the MMK since May 1, 2018 .
building
In the middle of Passau's old town, the MMK has an exhibition area of almost 1,000 m² on three levels. Located directly on the Danube, the renovation of four - formerly independent - old town houses by the founder and architect Hanns Egon Wörlen created an unusual ensemble with structural elements from the Romanesque , Gothic , Baroque and Classicism periods . In addition to this architectural diversity, the building is characterized by spaciousness and views of the Danube, the Veste Oberhaus and Veste Niederhaus .
