Hans-Peter Wipplinger (born January 12, 1968 in Schärding ) is an Austrian exhibition maker , author and museum director.

Career

Hans-Peter Wipplinger studied art history , theater studies , journalism and communication studies at the University of Vienna . He graduated on “The phenomenon of the construction of history. Remembering and forgetting - Scientific history discourse versus artistic approach to the representation of history. Exemplified using the example of the artistic work of the forensic person and memory artist Christian Boltanski .

Hans-Peter Wipplinger worked a. a. on OK. Center for Contemporary Art in Linz (1992–1994), at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York (2000–2001) and at the Viennale - Vienna International Film Festival (2001–2003). In 1998 he founded (together with Heide Linzer) the company "art: phalanx - art and communication office", which was dedicated to the conception, financing, realization and mediation of art and cultural projects in Austria, and which he was managing partner until the end of 2008 directed. From 2003 to 2007 he was director of the Museum of Modern Art in Passau , where he produced monographic works on Anna Jermolaewa (2004), Franz West (2004), Yoko Ono (2005), Jürgen Klauke (2006), Zoran Mušič (2007) or Dan Perjovschi (2007).

From 2009 to 2015 he was director of the Kunsthalle Krems , the Factory, the Kunstraum Stein and the AIR - artist-in-residence program in Krems an der Donau in Lower Austria. At the beginning of his activity, his tasks included the further development of the exhibition program for the location of the Kunstmeile Krems, the repositioning of individual exhibition institutions, the creation of new strategies in the areas of corporate identity, corporate design, press and public relations as well as increased networking with international exhibition institutions. At the Kunsthalle Krems he curated highly regarded retrospectives on Paula Modersohn-Becker (2010) or Francis Picabia (2012), Personalen zu Joseph Beuys (2008), Daniel Spoerri (2011), Gelatin and Sarah Lucas (2011) as well as themed exhibitions such as “Sehnsucht nach the image. The portrait through the ages ”(2009),“ Nouveau Réalisme ”(2011) or“ Great feelings. From antiquity to the present ”(2013).

Together with Tomas Zierhofer-Kin , the director of the donaufestival Krems, he developed new presentation formats in the border area between performance, sound art and installation, in order to explore acoustic, pop-cultural and performative boundaries in dialogue with visual arts. As part of this collaboration, artists such as Douglas Gordon (2013), Tino Sehgal (2013), John Bock (2012), Jonathan Meese (2011), Ole Aselmann (2011), Franz Graf & Franz Pomassl , Magnus Arnason, Stilluppsteyppa etc. . (2010) as a guest at the Kunsthalle Krems.

Since June 2015 he has been the museological director of the Leopold Museum , where he a. a. Retrospectives on Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Ferdinand Hodler and Richard Gerstl as well as the dialogue exhibition "Carl Spitzweg - Erwin Wurm. Delicious! Delicious?" and curated the new presentation "Vienna 1900. Dawn of Modernism".

He was and is a member of various juries and advisory boards, including a. for the Federal Ministry for Art, Education and Culture, Vienna; at juries of Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg and Tyrol; Member of the cultural senate of Lower Austria; as well as jury member for the T-Mobile Art Award, Boston Consulting & Belvedere Art Award, Prag Art Award, Strabag Art Award and Österreichische Post AG.

As an author and editor, he has written numerous art-historical essays on both modern and contemporary art.
