The Donaufestival is a series of events for contemporary art and culture in Lower Austria .

history

The festival was founded in 1988 and is supported and financed by the state of Lower Austria. From 2005 the Danube Festival was under the artistic direction of Tomas Zierhofer-Kin . On two weekends in spring, Krems an der Donau becomes an international platform for new performance art and music. New forms of theater, media theater, film, video, rap , spoken word , hip-hop , experimental music, sound art , post-rock , electronics and discourse pop are offered. Artists from the most varied of genres deal with the strategies, dystopias and utopias of media and mass society.

Well-known artists and groups that performed at the Donaufestival included: the Wiener Symphoniker , David Tibet , Nurse With Wound , Will Oldham , Throbbing Gristle , Gang of Four , JG Thirlwell , Věra Bílá & Kale , the Chris Jarrett Trio and Squarepusher .

The company is based in Krems an der Donau, the main venues are the Krems exhibition halls and the Krems Minorite Church .

In 2017 Thomas Edlinger took over the management of the Danube Festival as the successor to Tomas Zierhofer-Kin.

In 2020 the festival was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
