David Tibet (birth name: David Michael Bunting; born March 5, 1960 in Batu Gajah , Malaysia ) is a British singer, painter, author and label owner. He is best known as the founder of Apocalyptic folk / neofolk - band Current 93 ; Tibet itself rejects the categorization of the band as post-industrial , neofolk or dark folk. As a reaction to the categorization of his person, he dropped the name Tibet and called himself only David Michael.

music

David Tibet first grew up in Malaysia and describes his childhood there as "almost perfect". In 1973 his parents moved him back to Great Britain, where he approached the then popular glam rock , with which he had already come into contact in Malaysia. In England he first went to a boarding school in Northern England. After graduating, he went to University in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1978 ; there he began to study political science , which he broke off after a short time. He moved to London to study Tibetan . Even at that time he was interested in metaphysical topics on the one hand, and in music beyond the mainstream such as Krautrock , or industrial , which was just experiencing its heyday , on the other . He made contact with bands like Whitehouse and Throbbing Gristle and became a regular visitor to concerts by the latter group. Their member Genesis P-Orridge nicknamed his friend "Tibet" because of his interest in the Tibetan language and culture at the time. P-Orridge also invited him to join his new band Psychic TV after Throbbing Gristle ended . Tibet appeared on the album Themes I , which was included for free on the debut album Force the Hand of Chance , and the second album Dreams Less Sweet , and also played in the industrial band 23 Skidoo ; however, when he got along with P-Orridge, he left Psychic TV to focus on his own music. The first release of his band Current 93, the 12 " LAShTAL , he recorded during his time on Psychic TV with John Balance ( Coil ) and Fritz Haaman from 23 Skidoo. While David Keenan from The Wire in LAShTAL created a prototype of the sounds that used to be Current- 93 recordings, Tibet subsequently referred to the release as a “worthless record”, which has no relation to the other activities of Current 93. This band can also be classified with their early albums in the field of atonal noise music , after a few years the electronic sound producers became but replaced by acoustic instruments, which gave most of the recordings a folk- like sound, but Tibet denied the impression that he was a great fan of folk, and song and lyrics were also given more prominence.

Although Tibet is the only permanent member of Current 93, collaborations with other artists play a major role. The most important constant in a long series of collaborations is Steven Stapleton , whom he met at the Equinox Festival in 1983 and who is involved in almost all of the band's recordings, and whose own group Nurse with Wound is in turn supported by Tibet. The second constant has been guitarist and pianist Michael Cashmore , who has composed a large part of the music for Current 93 , since the early 1990s . In the early years of his career, Tibet also worked with artists such as Steve Ignorant and Little Annie (both including Crass ), Douglas Pearce ( Crisis , Death in June ), John Balance ( Coil ), Boyd Rice , Tony Wakeford ( Sol Invictus ), Björk , Nick Cave , Joolie Wood and Rose McDowall came together in recent years. a. Christoph Heemann ( Hirsche Not Aufs Sofa ), Andria Degens , the author Thomas Ligotti , Antony Hegarty ( Antony and the Johnsons ), Baby Dee , Simon Finn , Marc Almond , Andrew WK , Al Cisneros from OM and Maniac (Sven Erik Kristiansen) from Skitiv added.

Together with Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson , Niki Mono and Peter77 he recorded an album called The Aryan Aquarians . The project was described as follows: "The album was meant to be a bogus 60s band that never was" (German: "The album should be a fictional 60s band that never existed" ).

In 2009 the Japanese band Sigh announced a new album called Scenes from Hell , which was released on January 29, 2010 via The End Records and includes contributions from David Tibet and Kam Lee ( Massacre ), among others . Shortly afterwards, the first album of the Norwegian band Skitliv , Skandinavisk misantropi , appeared on the Tibet as a guest singer on the song Towards the Shores of Loss / Vulture Face Kain ; Guitarist and lead vocalist Maniac says Tibet is one of his best friends, Tibet is a big fan of Maniac's former band Mayhem, and Maniac says he's an interesting person who also has Current 93 tattoos. The limited picture disc edition will also include an exclusive Current 93 title and artwork from Tibet.

In recent years, too, Tibet has launched a number of projects outside of Current 93. The project Myrninerest, founded together with James Blackshaw , who also plays guitar on the more recent Current 93 albums, received special attention , whose only album to date, "Jhonn", Uttered Babylon (2012) is dedicated to the memory of his former companion John Balance (Coil) . Together with The Youth from Killing Joke , Tibet founded the band Hypnopazūzu in 2016, whose debut 'Create Christ, Sailor Boy' is more electronic than Tibet's works in recent years.

Further activities

Tibet's main interest was initially Christianity , but he was also interested in Hinduism , Buddhism and Taoism , which he attributes to growing up in Malaysia. He developed an early interest in the Bible and New Testament apocrypha as well as eschatological and apocalyptic writings. Tibet is and was v. a. at the beginning of his career as a follower of Thelema , the teaching of Aleister Crowley , with which he began to occupy himself at the age of 10 or 12. While LAShTAL is clearly occult and Tibet was a member of the Ordo Templi Orientis at the time of its creation , in later years it often expressed itself critically or parodistically (e.g. in the title Crowleymass ) towards this new religious movement, Crowley and occultism in general expressed a rather ambivalent attitude; People today wrongly assume that Crowley likes Tibet less than he actually does, but that Crowley has always been his "bad uncle", the "necessary Judas for the Catholic Church". Nevertheless, he has been a member and assessor of the international advisory cabinet of the Ordo Templi Orientis (as of April 2006), whose chairman William Breeze also plays on some of his records. His personal beliefs originally linked Christian and Buddhist ideas with an eschatological focus, which was also reflected in his texts. In the late 1980s he saw himself as a Buddhist. In retrospect, however, Tibet said that he also called himself a Christian when he became interested in Hinduism and Buddhism or when he became more involved with Crowley; a work like Nature Unveiled is also Christian. The Buddhist elements have been reduced in recent years in favor of an even greater focus on Christian teaching. The teachings of early Christianity in particular are one of his central areas of interest. Because of his enthusiasm for the apocryphal Gospel of Thomas , which is only available in fragments on Koinē but in full in the Coptic language , he began to learn it in order to be able to read it in the original. Tibet now studied Coptic Studies .

After a few self-designed record covers, Tibet has also been a painter since the late 1990s. His wax paintings, mostly reminiscent of naive art , in high-contrast primary colors have already been exhibited in several galleries and are considered exemplary of contemporary Outsider Art . Tibet is the founder of the Durtro label, which is now called Durtro Jnana. Almost all of Current 93's recordings appear there, as well as numerous records by some artist friends. Part of this company are also the small book publishers Durtro Press and Ghost Story Press, which in addition to some works from Tibet v. a. Editions by selected authors such as Graf Eric Stenbock and Thomas Ligotti are published.

Tibet currently lives in Hastings in the south of England . Both Tibet and Pantaleimon , his wife Andria Degens' band, also contributed to the soundtrack of Cam Archers Films Wild Tigers I Have Known , Tibet in both the form of a spoken intro and a Current 93 track. During the making of the album Baalstorm, Sing Omega , Tibet and his wife separated.

Tibet also wrote an introduction to an exhibition catalog by Uwe Henneken, a German artist who made pictures for Current 93's vinyl-on-demand box sets, and the foreword to a book of collected short stories by Aleister Crowley published in 2010 by Wordsworth Editions was published. A second volume of unpublished short stories has been announced.
