Simon Finn (born March 4, 1951 in Surrey ) is an English folk singer and guitarist.

CV and musical career

Finn was born in Surrey and moved to London in 1967 . There he first appeared in the opening act for Al Stewart at the Marquee Club in Soho . He released his first LP Pass the Distance in 1970, later the record achieved cult status as a sought-after collector's item on Mushroom Records. The reason was the publication stop due to a legal dispute. The album includes contributions by Kenneth Elliot and David Toop and is often assigned to the subgenre Acid Folk.

In 1974 Finn moved to Canada, where he initially worked as a farmer and karate teacher. Since 1980 he has lived (with a few brief interruptions) in Montreal , Quebec . Since then Finn has continued to write music and some literary texts, but hardly published anything for years. It wasn't until 2004 that Pass the Distance was re-released on Durtro / Jnana. In the same year, Finn performed live for the first time after a 35-year hiatus from the music scene. His first performance was as a support act for the Current 93 group in Toronto . Since then he has played in many countries, sometimes together with artists such as Graham Coxon , Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth , Antony and the Johnsons , Joolie Wood , Maja Elliott , Pantaleimon and Baby Dee . His second album Magic Moments was released 35 years after its predecessor and is characterized by a darker, more melancholy, but also more minimalist sound than the debut: In addition to vocals and acoustic guitar, flute and violin can only be heard occasionally.

Finn was also part of the live cast of Current 93, who reinterpreted two songs from his debut album ( The Courtyard and Jerusalem ) with Finn on guitar in 2004 . Finn's next album, Accidental Life , was released in July 2007. The participants on the more opulent recordings include Joolie Wood (who is the only Finn to accompany on Magic Moments ), David Toop (the only one of the original line-up), Karl Blake (and others). Shock Headed Peters ), Danielle Dax , Rose McDowall ( Sorrow , Strawberry Switchblade ) and Tony Uter . The record was released on Finn's own independent label 10 to 1 Records. On his latest work Rats Laugh Mice Sing , Finn builds on the broader instrumented sound of the predecessor.
