The Þeistareykjabunga is a shield volcano in northeast Iceland . The mountain is made up of layers of lava and reaches a height of 564  m . This is the central volcano of its own active volcanic system. The last eruption took place in prehistoric times. The main crater of the mountain is called Stóra-Víti and lies in the middle of the extensive flat cone that the mountain forms.

To the north of this is a secondary crater that is 500–600 m long and 50–60 m wide. This 40 m deep crater is called Langa-Víti and it is here that the mountain reaches its highest height. From this crater, lava flows have flowed northwards and have reached inhabited areas near Lón and Lindarbrekka .

After the last ice age, the shield volcano was very active like many others in the country. For example, it blocked the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river in its lower reaches at Öxarfjörður with a significant lava eruption , pushing it further east into its current bed.

A high temperature area with hot springs belongs to the volcano ( Þeistareykir ).
