Þeistareykir is a volcanic system in northern Iceland named after an abandoned farm nearby. The associated central volcano is the Þeistareykjabunga shield volcano .

General

The system, located on the Tjörnes peninsula east of Húsavík , is in the highlands of Iceland . It is also south of Öxarfjörður , is about 30 km long and extends from SSW to NNE to the fjord.

It is controversial in the geological literature when the last eruptions of the system occurred. It depends on whether you include the Mánáreyjar or not. In any case, the volcanic system is still considered active, especially since a significant high-temperature area is located in the vicinity of the central volcano.

Mánáreyjar

Mánáreyjar

The the Öxarfjörður offshore island group of Mánáreyjar is by some scientists ( Thor Thordarson, Ármann Höskuldsson counted) still to this volcanic system of others it considered its own system ( Ari Trausti Guðmundsson ).

The two islands are called Háey (dt. High island ) and Lágey (dt. Low island ) and are located about 9 km north of the farm Máná , which in turn is the northernmost farm in the municipality of Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla . The islands are owned by the farm and Lágey is grazed in summer. In the yard there is a weather station and a northern light observation station of the Japanese (see Augastaðir in Reykholtsdalur , Borgarfjörður ).

In 1867, a volcanic eruption on the sea floor created a third island, which was soon completely eroded by the sea.

A number of archipelago islands surround the Mánáreyjar.

Property dispute and environmental influences

The volcanic system and especially the high temperature area were often featured in the Icelandic press in 2007 and 2008. It was about property rights and environmental protection. The state and the Þeistareykir company want to build another geothermal power plant there. In September 2008 the permission to carry out test drilling was confirmed again. The energy should be v. a. another aluminum plant , which is planned to be built at Bakki near Húsavík . The conservationists are against these plans.
