Baby Dee (* 1953 in Cleveland , Ohio as Dee Norris) is an American singer , pianist and harpist .

Musical development

After various activities (including as a choir director and organist in a Catholic parish in the Bronx and as a circus performer) she met Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons in New York and worked on the band's debut album. A short time later, her first solo albums appeared. Her music is often described as eccentric, but also very fragile and emotional, with cabaret and chanson elements. Dee sings falsetto , but not exclusively. While she had recorded her first releases single-handedly, a number of well-known musicians are involved in her most successful album to date, "Safe Inside the Day", for example Will Oldham , Matt Sweeney , Andrew WK , William Breeze and John Contreras . Rock elements have now also been integrated into the sound with guitars and electric bass. Baby Dee's lyrics are partly autobiographical and deal with topics such as childhood memories, outsiders and aspects of transsexuality ; despite serious moments, they also show a sense of bizarre comedy .

Dee has played live regularly in recent years, often with other musicians such as Current 93 (some of whom she is involved in recording), Marc Almond , Rickie Lee Jones , Julia Kent , Little Annie and Simon Finn .
