Little Annie

Little Annie (actually Anne Bandez , also known under the pseudonym Annie Anxiety ) is an American singer, painter, and stage actress. In addition to her own recordings, Bandez is known for her numerous contributions to the work of a wide variety of avant-garde musicians since the 1980s. Mention should be made of the rock musician Kid Congo Powers , the dub artist Adrian Sherwood , the experimental punk band Crass and the electronic band Coil .

Life

In the late 1970s, Annie first appeared as the front woman of the punk band Annie and the Asexuals . The group did not release any records, but made a name for themselves through numerous live performances. Among her fans was Frank Zappa . Annie went to England in the early 1980s, where she quickly made contacts with renowned groups in the scene. In the following years she worked on recordings for the punk group Crass , the electronics pioneer Coil and Current 93, who was active in the post-industrial spectrum at the time . In the coil track Things Happen on their classic album Love's Secret Domain , Annie first demonstrated her vocal skills in alto and pointed to later. Little Annie has lived and worked in New York for several years and has repeatedly recorded solo albums since the 1980s. After very different creative excursions in various styles of postpunk, dub and experimental electronics, Little Annie seems to have found her appropriate style in addition to her label Durtro Jnana in recent years : Her most successful album to date was Songs from the Coalmine Canary (2006) Recorded together with Antony Hegarty from Antony and the Johnsons and Joe Budenholzer from Backworld and contains a collection of mostly balladesque torch songs in lamentation between jazz , cabaret , soul and chanson . Her singing has been compared to Marianne Faithfull and Grace Jones , as well as younger singers like Amy Winehouse . The album also includes the title Strange Love , which was used in a Levi’s commercial and was named best commercial song of 2006 at the Cannes Film Festival . Her next album, When Good Things Happen to Bad Pianos , recorded together with her live pianist Paul Wallfisch ( Botanica ), follows on stylistically from its predecessor, although it mainly contains reinterpretations of some of her favorite songs. New recordings are made a. Songs by Tina Turner , U2 , Frank Sinatra , Charles Aznavour and Jacques Brel . The current album Genderful , which again contains original compositions, was also created together with Wallfisch. Bandez and Wallfisch have already shared the stage as a live duo with musicians like Marc Almond and Baby Dee .

painting

Little Annie is also a painter and regularly exhibits in galleries. Her emphatically naive , somewhat folkloric painting style is figurative and often contrasts harmoniously looking people or objects with a background of spacious, sometimes desolate urban landscapes. The focus is often on colors such as red and orange, the contours are less sharp and the surface often looks washed out. Comparisons to Frieda Kahlo have already been made, also to the typical artwork of the psychedelic era. In her Urban Saints series, the focus is on sacred figures. Madonnas , angels and figures of Christ are partially reminiscent of classic icon painting or quotations from religious works of the Italian Renaissance such as B. Giotto . In her September Skyline series , motifs that refer to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 were integrated .
