Adrian Sherwood

Adrian Maxwell Sherwood (* 1958 in London ) is a British music producer , musician and label owner who has significantly influenced the development of dub .

Life

His career began working with musicians such as Emperor Rosko , Judge Dread , Johnny Walker and Steve Barnard . At seventeen he co-founded the Carib Gems label . Here he released the first records of Prince Far I , from which he also learned a lot musically.

Sherwood founded several labels, including Hitrun Records (1978), which released the first Roots Radics dub set Dub to Africa and the first "chapter" of Prince Far I's Crytuff Dub Encounter , the latter mixed and co-produced by Sherwood. Green Tea Records and Soundboy Records are less well known . At that time he also produced the slits .

His best known label is On-U Sound Records (founded in 1980). The New Age Steppers , Bim Sherman , African Head Charge and Dub Syndicate are major groups that released on this label, many of which were also produced by Sherwood. He also worked with other greats in the dub and reggae business , such as Mad Professor .

In New York , Adrian Sherwood got together with guitarist Skip McDonald , bassist Doug Wimbish and drummer Keith LeBlanc , who were the house band of the rap label Sugarhill Records . Together they produced various pieces under different names that strongly shaped the character of ON-U. Much of it ran under the Tackhead project , of which he is a fourth member as a mixologist .

Adrian Sherwood became known to a wider public in the mid-1980s when he remixed and produced well-known artists such as Depeche Mode , the Einstürzende Neubauten , Simply Red , Sinéad O'Connor and Ministry . Groups like Coldcut , Skinny Puppy and the Nine Inch Nails were added later.

Adrian Sherwood continued to produce reggae in the 1990s, including for Bim Sherman, Junior Delgado and the Italian dub band Almamegretta .

Sherwood has been releasing solo albums under his real name since 2003.
