Antony and the Johnsons is an American band from New York around the singer , songwriter and pianist Anohni (Antony Hegarty). Anohni is also an artist.

biography

Anohni is transgender , she was born as Antony Hegarty in Chichester , Sussex ( England ) in 1971 . She moved to Amsterdam with her parents in 1977 before the family settled in California the following year . As a teenager, she became enthusiastic about contemporary British synthpop , especially the soulful Torch Song performers like Marc Almond and Boy George . In 1990 she moved to Manhattan , where she founded the Blacklips artistic association with partner Johanna Constantine .

When the British neofolk musician David Tibet heard a demo from Current 93 , the latter offered to release Antony's music on his Durtro label . The first release was a split CD in 2000 with a song each from Current 93 ( Immortal Bird ) and the track Cripple And The Starfish by Antony And The Johnsons. The debut album Antony and the Johnsons was released shortly thereafter. She referred the band name to the New York transgender activist Marsha P. Johnson . An EP followed in 2001, I Fell in Love with a Dead Boy , which, in addition to the title track, contains the cover version of a David Lynch / Angelo Badalamenti song and a Current 93 song.

After the producer Hal Willner heard the EP and presented it to Lou Reed , Antony immediately recruited for his project The Raven . In the wake of the growing attention Antony received, she signed on to the US label Secretly Canadian , where she released another EP called The Lake , on which Lou Reed was a guest on one of the tracks. In addition, Secretly Canadian released the debut album again in 2004, with which this reached a wider audience. The second full-length album - I Am a Bird Now (2005) - received critical acclaim, including the UK's Mercury Music Prize .

Antony's voice has been compared to singers like Billie Holiday , Nina Simone, and Otis Redding . Numerous prominent admirers, including Philip Glass , Marc Almond, Lou Reed, Devendra Banhart and the guest singers Boy George and Rufus Wainwright who appear on I Am a Bird Now , appreciate Antony's work.

Hegarty can be heard as a guest singer on the album Volta by the Icelandic singer Björk, which was released in 2007 . In two songs ( The Dull Flame of Desire ; My Juvenile ) Hegarty sings in a duet with Björk. In 2008 Hegarty sang the song Will I Ever Learn? With Herbert Grönemeyer . for his best-of album Was muss muss ein. In 2008 she also worked on the music project Hercules and Love Affair . The album The Crying Light was released on January 19, 2009 . The first single from this album, entitled Another World , was released on October 10, 2008. The Swanlights announced months before with eleven new songs was released punctually on October 10, 2010. With Fletta it contains a duet with Björk. A forerunner EP was released in August 2010, which only contained the song Thank You for Your Love (also available as a video) from the current album , as well as a cover version by Imagine . Swedish DJ Avicii produced a house version of Hope There's Someone for his debut album True . Swedish Idol participant Linnea Henriksson contributed the text .

Antony Hegarty has been called Anohni since 2015 and has been producing music under this name ever since. On May 6, 2016, she released the album Hopelessness under this name .

In 2016, Anohni's artistic, painterly and graphic work was exhibited for the first time in the Kunsthalle Bielefeld .

She also works with Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never .

style

The songs by Antony and the Johnsons are ballads that are mostly played in chamber music with piano, cello, violins and acoustic guitars, and now and then also drums and electric bass. They are dominated by Anohni's extraordinary voice. The songs are consistently very melancholy , tell of the strangeness in the world, of wistful moments of love and of the desire to be someone else and thus to be free. Anohni also indirectly addresses her life situation as an intersex person. The very sentimental song Cripple and the Starfish is part of the soundtrack of the ARD- Tatort episode "Sleeping Beauty Revenge".
