Devendra Banhart (born May 30, 1981 in Houston , Texas ) is an American-Venezuelan psychedelic folk singer and songwriter . His albums , published by Young God Records and most recently by XL Recordings , as well as the compilation he put together The Golden Apples of the Sun , which gathers musicians such as Joanna Newsom , Antony and the Johnsons , CocoRosie and Josephine Foster , are style-defining for the New Weird- America movement.
Life
Banhart's parents took the first name Devendra from Prem Rawat , an Indian mystic whose followers they were. They separated two years after the birth of their son. Devendra moved with his Venezuelan mother to Caracas , Venezuela , where he stayed until he was 14 years old. When Devendra's mother remarried, the family moved to Los Angeles .
Banhart has been writing pieces for guitar since he was twelve.
In 1998 Devendra Banhart moved to San Francisco to study at the San Francisco Art Academy . He lived in the famous gay district of Castro and soon began to play guitar in various bars and clubs .
In 2000 he broke off his studies and moved to Paris, where he was discovered in a small club. In the same year he went back to the United States and commuted back and forth between San Francisco and Los Angeles without a permanent residence. During this time he recorded songs, sometimes on friends' answering machines . His first two publications are composed of these pieces.
Banhart is considered the leader of a pop music revival movement called "Freak Folk".

Banhart's first album, The Charles C. Leary , was released by Hinah in 2002 and does not even appear in most discographies ; Mostly Oh Me Oh My ... The Way the Day Goes By the Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs of the Christmas Spirit is referred to as his debut. In the next few years, Rejoicing in the Hands , Niño Rojo and Cripple Crow appeared in quick succession .
