Prem Rawat (complete: Prem Pal Singh Rawat; born December 10, 1957 in Kankhal, India) is a spiritual teacher living in the USA who has been on lecture tours around the world since the age of 14 to achieve personal peace through the use of meditation techniques learned by his father propagated. Other focal points of his work are international peace conferences and initiatives, as well as humanitarian projects. Since 1971, when he was first invited to speak about his message of peace in front of an audience outside India, he has received several international awards and, as a result, is often referred to in the media in the 21st century as an “Ambassador of Peace”.

He was born on December 10, 1957 in Kankhal, India, a small town on the outskirts of Haridwar on the Ganges . He grew up in Dehradun in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh , where he went to school. After he succeeded his father in 1966, he was called Guru Maharaj Ji according to a traditional form of address for a spiritual master in India . He gave up this title in the 1980s. Today he is called Prem Rawat in public, also called Maharaji by his students.

Life

Prem Rawat at the age of 8 after the death of his father Shri Hans Ji Maharaj (July 1966) in traditional mourning clothes and shaved.

Prem Rawat, also known as Balyogeshwar (about: born ruler of yoga) or Sant Ji as a child , is the youngest of the four sons of Shri Hans Ji Maharaj . He was a religiously independent spiritual teacher and founded the Indian Divine Light Mission (DLM) in 1960 . Prem Rawat's mother belonged to the Hindu religion. At his father's request, Prem Rawat attended the Catholic primary school St. Joseph's in Dehra Dun , mainly to learn English .

After his father's death in 1966, Prem Rawat, then eight years old, was recognized as the successor to the management of the DLM. According to Prem Rawat's biographer Andrea Cagan , there was considerable disagreement within the family regarding the succession. In 1971, at the age of 13, without his family and contrary to his mother's wishes, he toured Europe, the United States and Canada, where he held events in Los Angeles and Boulder , Colorado , among others . An offshoot of the DLM was established in Denver to organize further tours and events. Prem Rawat was called and worshiped as the Perfect Master (in India: Satguru ) by his disciples, many of whom lived in " Ashrams " under traditional rules . He teaches four concentration techniques that a Knowledge allow (knowledge) called inner experience.

Los Angeles Airport, July 17, 1971. Prem Rawat lands for the first time in the USA, where especially his childhood (13) caught the attention of the media.

In 1974, sixteen-year-old Prem Rawat married 25-year-old Marolyn Johnson, one of his first American students, who at times was called Durga Ji according to Hindu custom . Rawat's family split for good after the marriage. The mother (Mata Ji) "deposed him because of the playboy lifestyle", disinherited him and returned to India with two of the three brothers, where she appointed the eldest, Satpal or formerly Bal Bhagwan Ji , to succeed Shri Hans Ji Maharaj. However, the western students of Prem Rawat largely unanimously supported him and Rawat was now spreading his message independently of family or traditional ties. The Indian context of his mission faded into the background and the traditional DLM was dissolved together with the Ashrams. In 1983 he founded the successor organizations Elan Vital , 2001 The Prem Rawat Foundation and 2008 Words of Peace Global . He also has students in India ( Raj Vidya Kender ).

More than 130,000 people came to an event in 2004 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Delhi).

Prem Rawat lives in the USA and spends most of the time on international lecture and training trips. In addition to his appearances in the context of caring for fans and interested parties, he also speaks at various cultural and political forums.

In 2005 he reached an audience of over 1.5 million at events on four continents. On a lecture tour in India and Nepal in April and May 2007, he had over 3 million listeners. In 2014, Rawat's television series Words of Peace , which has received awards from various independent bodies, was broadcast in 48 languages and 50 countries. With the spread of the Internet, it is increasingly based on Internet portals (Rawat's personal website; 'Words of Peace').

In 2007, the Prem Rawat Foundation (The Prem Rawat Foundation, TPRF) established by Rawat began a successful Peace Education Program (PEP) for prisoners. B. was used in 2012 in 28 prisons in 10 countries including the USA, South Africa, India, Spain, Ireland and England. A dramatic decrease in student recidivism has been linked to this, according to TPRF, three to four out of 700 program participants after 5 years in Dominguez State Prison in San Antonio, Texas. In 2015 a documentary about this program, 'Inside Peace' by Cynthia Fitzpatrick, won an award at six different film festivals.

As part of his international teaching activities, he held a. a. extracurricular lectures at several universities. He has also spoken at a number of conferences on peace, including: B. in June 2010 and November 2011 at the invitation of the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella in the House of the European Parliament , Brussels with the title: “Words of Peace Europe”. Subsequently, Rawat and Pittella, as well as representatives of public and private institutions and organizations, signed a pledge to peace. In it, the signatories undertook to report on their activities to promote peace at the international " World Day of Peace ", which is organized by the UN every year on September 21. The Times Foundation , of which The Times of India belongs, and Rawat's Indian organization Raj Vidya Kender organized the 1st Youth Peace Fest in Delhi in February 2014 , at which Rawat was the keynote speaker in front of over 200,000 young people. The Times of India , India's largest English-language daily newspaper, considered conservative , printed a detailed report, and there was also a positive report on the affiliated TV news channel Times Now .

A biography of Rawat, Peace is Possible by Andrea Cagan , was published in 2006 with a foreword by Emilio Colombo , a former President of the European Parliament and former Prime Minister of Italy. In 2009 Rawat was named "Ambassador of Peace" for the Basilicata region in Italy and was awarded the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in Malaysia in September 2012 for his "contributions to the spread of global peace".

Teaching

The teaching of Prem Rawat is associated by scholars with certain manifestations of different spiritual currents, for example on the background of Hinduism with Sant Mat , Radhasoami , Sat Guru (true master) or Avatar . So wrote z. B. the Protestant theologian Michael Mildenberger 1973 in the journal Materialdienst of the Evangelical Central Office for Weltanschauungsfragen , which wants to "contribute to the Christian orientation in religious and ideological pluralism": "Overall, the ideas of the Divine Light Mission seem most like a slurred and universalist advaita - underlying philosophy. So that classic Hindu conviction, according to which Brahman, the divine source of all being and Atman, the innermost core of man, are one, and whose religious striving is to become aware of this unity in the enlightenment. ” Ron Geaves , in an essay for the Journal of Alternative Spiritualities and New Age Studies , on the other hand, emphasizes the ideological and traditional independence and sovereignty in the role of the master, also called Sant. He points out that in the course of history solitary figures (Sant) appear again and again with the claim to reveal a living experience of the innermost being of the human being without necessarily resorting to pre-existing teachings, traditions, philosophies or religions. Examples from the Indian tradition: Kabir ; Nanak ; Mirabai , in the Islamic tradition ( Sufism ): Jalal ad-Din ar-Rumi . An invariable characteristic of many of these teachings is the central role of the special relationship between living master and disciple. This prompted the EZW to see Prem Rawat and his students as "descendants or groups in the wider area of the Radhasoami tradition". However, the professor of religious studies Ron Geaves (2007) contradicts this view in the article "From Totapuri to Maharaji: Reflections on a Lineage (Parampara)".

The Sant has direct access to the highest truth and an inner source of constant joy found in all people and can also impart the same access to his disciples. The latent, structurally innate holiness ideal ( knowledge ) of the Sant is open to everyone and transcends the boundaries of religions and castes . It doesn't have to be believed. The knowledge is simple and does not require any previous knowledge or special talent, but cannot be achieved without a living master. It only manifests itself in the interaction between master and disciple. Fantasy and imagination tend to have a limiting effect, whereas the willingness to surrender to knowledge is beneficial .

Not only in India, Sant Master often appeared as a reformer of frozen religious systems in world history. Prem Rawat is currently representing this offer for the first time on a global level, although he does not explicitly refer to this tradition, but to his personal talent.

His topic is the experience of a universal level of consciousness (of knowledge ) common to all human beings , from which the individual experience of peace and fulfillment is possible. A social coexistence in peace is a consequence of this knowledge.

Prem Rawat speaks at the first “Peace Conference” of the University of Salamanca (June 30, 2003)

The knowloedge"

To be introduced to the techniques of knowledge , the student must be of legal age. Individuals preparing to be introduced to the techniques of knowledge are called aspirants . After appropriate preparation, the techniques are taught by Prem Rawat in a five-hour correspondence course ( key DVDs no. 1–5) in the form of a special video presentation ( key DVD no. 6). The preparation as well as the participation in the introduction and further training are free. The organizational effort is financed exclusively through voluntary donations.

After the introduction, the person is now able to practice the four techniques of knowledge independently.

According to Prem Rawat, knowledge can be realized through regular practice of the four concentrative techniques he has taught, the effectiveness of which, however, should only result from the interaction with other conditions: Contact with the teacher through participation (also in the form of DVD, webcast or podcast and the like) in his courses, furthermore participation (support of Prem Rawats projects). The aim is to guide the students into a lifelong development process with the aim of permanent conscious experience of knowledge .

student

Numerous first followers came from the hippie movement of the 1960s and 1970s and shaped the external appearance of the movement. Many elements of the external representation were taken from Indian tradition. The young Prem Rawat was worshiped by his followers at the time to a degree that was problematic for Westerners.

Many of these initially enthusiastic supporters from the counterculture of the time saw their often messianic expectations not being met and withdrew from around the mid-1970s. Some disappointed former students later organized themselves on the Internet and began to fight Prem Rawat's work.

It is estimated that Prem Rawat currently serves hundreds of thousands of practicing students worldwide, the vast majority of them in India. According to a press release, the number of new students exceeded 50,000 for the first time in 2004. An exact determination of the total number of actual practicing students is difficult because there are hardly any formal membership criteria. Since 2005, the introduction to teaching and concentration techniques has mainly been through a DVD-supported distance learning course, called the keys , which at the end includes a practical introduction to the techniques of knowledge . According to the Key Information website, 365,237 people in 67 countries have been introduced to the knowledge in this way since the keys were set up through May 2008 .

reception

The reactions to Prem Rawat's appearance outside of India were emotionally polarized, especially in the beginning. Prem Rawat's message was hardly taken seriously behind the exotic surface. In the western media public, the reaction was accordingly rather superficial and not serious. A typical example is the reporting and the interview with Prem Rawat in Der Spiegel on October 8, 1973. In 1974, a documentary report on the "Millennium 73", which was then much noticed in the American entertainment media, was published on US television under the title Lord of the Universe. -Festival in Houston, Texas. Prem Rawat was only 15 years old at the time and the event was organized by his eldest brother Satpal (“Bal Bhagwan Ji”). It fell short of organizational and financial expectations.

In the 21st century he gave interviews to a few television stations. When asked how he deals with criticism, Rawat said in a television interview in Taiwan in 2014: “As far as I'm concerned, my life is not about appeasing critics, but rather bringing people the message of peace. [... ] If you do what I have been doing for over five decades, you get criticized. [...] People said, 'It will pass.' Well, how about 52 years! And I'm still fully involved because it's about my convictions. And my conviction is: Peace is possible. And I will do everything I have to do, because it is important to me that people find this peace in their lives. "
