history
Dehradun used to be the capital of Garhwal . The city was a target of British troops in the Gurkha Wars from 1814. At that time, the Nepalese control in the region was ended.
In Dehradun there was an internment camp for members of enemy states ( enemy alien , enemy foreigner) during World War II . Among other things, the participants of the German Nanga Parbat expedition of 1939 were interned there: Heinrich Harrer and Peter Aufschnaiter , Lutz Chicken and Hans Lobenhoffer. In his book Seven Years in Tibet, Heinrich Harrer mentions Rolf Magener , Heins von Have , Bruno Treipel, Hans Kopp, Sattler and the Italian Marchese as other inmates of the camp . The ophthalmologist Alfred Leber , the dancer Alexander von Swaine , the Indologist Walther Eidlitz , the German-born Buddhists Lama Anagarika Govinda , Nyanatiloka and Nyanaponika and the Jesuit father Felix zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg (1907-1986) were interned there for years . Harrer and Aufschnaiter managed to escape to Tibet on April 29, 1944 .
