The Dehradun District ( Hindi देहरादून जिला ) is a district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand . The district administration is based in Dehradun - also the interim capital of Uttarakhand.

The Dehradun District is located in the Garhwal Division in the southwest of Uttarakhand in the Siwalik Range at the foot of the Front Himalayas . Dehradun borders Himachal Pradesh to the west and Uttar Pradesh to the southwest . In the south lies the neighboring district of Haridwar , in the southeast Pauri Garhwal , in the east Tehri Garhwal and in the north Uttarkashi . The area of the Dehradun district is 3088 km². The district of Dehradun lies between the rivers of Tons and Yamuna in the west and that of the Ganges in the east. The largest city is Dehradun with 714,223 inhabitants (as of 2011, urban agglomeration). Then comes Rishikesh with 102,158 inhabitants.
