The Chamoli ( Hindi चमोली ज़िला ) district is a district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand . The district administration is based in Gopeshwar . The Charmoli district has existed since 1960.
geography
The Chamoli District is located in the Garhwal Division in the north of Uttarakhand in the Garhwal Himalayas . Chamoli borders on Uttarkashi in the northwest , Pithoragarh in the northeast, Bageshwar in the southeast, Almora in the south, Pauri Garhwal in the southwest and Rudraprayag in the west . In the north, the watershed of the main Himalayan ridge forms the border with the Tibet Autonomous Region . The area of the Chamoli district is 8030 km². The area of the Chamoli district is located in the catchment area of the Alaknanda . Other important river valleys are the Alaknanda, its tributaries Saraswati , Dhauliganga and Pindar . In the northeast is the Nanda Devi National Park . The Kamet group extends to the north, the Gangotri group to the northwest .
In the district are the 6,471 m high Balakun and the 5,879 m high Barmai .
