The district of Tehri Garhwal ( Hindi : टिहरी गढ़वाल ) has been a district in the newly founded Indian state of Uttarakhand since 2000 . The district administration is based in New Tehri .

The Tehri Garhwal District is located in the Garhwal Division to the west of Uttarakhand in the Front Himalayas . Tehri Garhwal borders on Dehradun in the west, Pauri Garhwal in the south, Rudraprayag in the east and Uttarkashi in the north . The area of ​​the district Tehri Garhwal is 3642 km². The district extends in the north to the Thalay Sagar (6904 m) in the southwest of the Gangotri group . The Bhilangna drains the northeastern part of the district. The lower reaches of the Bhagirathi flows through the south of the district. Bhagirathi and Bhilangna are dammed by the Tehri Dam . The southern district border forms the Alaknanda and below its confluence at Devprayag with the Bhagirathi the Ganges . In the southwest the Yamuna forms the border.
