The Bhagirathi ( Hindi : भागीरथी Bhāgīrathī) is the right source river of the Ganges in India.
The Bhagirathi flows through the districts of Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi in the Indian state of Uttarakhand .
Its source, the Gaumukh Glacier Gate at the foot of the Gangotri Glacier , is located at an altitude of 3892 m in the Gangotri Group in the western Himalayas . The Bhagirathi initially flows in a westerly direction past the place Gangotri . The Jahd Ganga flows into the river on the right. The Bhagirathi later turns south and reaches the district capital Uttarkashi . Further downstream at the confluence of the Bhilangna , the Bhagirathi is dammed by the Tehri dam . This is used to generate energy and for irrigation. About 60 km further downstream, the Bhagirathi meets the Alaknanda flowing in from the east at Devprayag at an altitude of 475 m , with which it unites to form the Ganges. The Bhagirathi is the longer source river with a river length of 205 km, while the Alaknanda is richer in water. The catchment area of the Bhagirathi covers 6921 km². The mean discharge is 258 m³ / s.
