Uttarkashi is a small town in the Indian state of Uttarakhand .

The city is the capital of the Uttarkashi district . Uttarkashi has the status of a Nagar Palika Parishad . The city is divided into 9 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census, it had a total of 17,475 inhabitants, of which 9601 were men and 7874 were women. Hindus form the largest group of the city's population with a share of approx. 94%, followed by Muslims with approx. 5%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 90.36%.

Uttarkashi has a number of ashrams and temples as well as the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering . The name of the city expresses its location north of the city of Kashi ( Varanasi ). Like Varanasi, the city lies on the Ganges .
