Gangotri ( Hindi गंगोत्री, Gaṅgotrī) is a place in the Uttarkashi district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand . It is located in the Himalayas at an altitude of 3042 meters. In 2011 the place had 110 inhabitants.
It is grouped around the temple dedicated to the goddess Ganga . The Gurkha General Amar Singh Thapa had it built at the beginning of the 18th century. The pilgrimage site is closed on the day of the Divali Festival of Lights and only reopened in May. During this time, the image of the goddess is kept in the village of Mukhba, twelve kilometers further downstream, near Harsil .
Gangotri with the Ganga Temple and the source of the Ganges is one of four stations on the legendary Char Dham pilgrimage route (literally: the four residences ).
The Ganges rises as Bhagirathi and only becomes the Ganges (Ganga) from Devprayag , where it unites with the Alaknanda (at a height of only 472 meters ). The source of the holy river is at about 4,000 meters altitude Gaumukh and is just walking on an 18-kilometer trek to reach tour of Gangotri from. Gaumukh means "mouth of the cow" in German; the name is due to the glacier cave from which the river rises.
