The Siwaliks are the outermost foothills of the southern Himalayas .

They extend at a maximum width of 60–80 km from Sikkim and northern West Bengal across the south of Nepal through Kashmir and other Indian states to Pakistan and reach heights of 600 to 1500  m .

Emergence

The Siwaliks are the youngest geological unit of the Himalayas. Geologically, the Siwaliks correspond to the flysch regions of the Alps. Constant erosion formed sediment deposits at the foot of the mountain range. Due to the tectonic folding, these sediments have gradually raised themselves to form today's Siwalik hills. They are known for their tertiary mammalian fauna.
