Arthur Lee (born March 7, 1945 in Memphis , Tennessee , † August 3, 2006 ibid), actually Arthur Lee Porter or Arthur Taylor Porter , American rock musician, became known as a front man , songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of West Coast Pop - and rock band Love , which also integrated elements of early psychedelic rock .

biography

At a young age, Lee moved to Los Angeles with his family . As a musician, he drew his inspiration from a wide variety of styles. He has often been compared to Syd Barrett , who in turn confessed that Love was a significant influence for his band Pink Floyd .

In 1963 Lee made his first recording with the band The LAG's . The song My Diary , recorded by Rosa Lee Brooks, with Jimi Hendrix as guitarist, became the first hit written by Lee. Other performers also had hits with pieces from Lee's pen.

Two years later, Lee changed the name of his then group The Grass Roots to Love, as there was already another band with the same name. Her third album Forever Changes (1967) is considered a pop-rock classic. On their second album was the title Revelation , which took up an entire record page.

In 1970 Arthur Lee recorded a jam session with his friend Jimi Hendrix, but it was not released. In 1972 his solo album Vindicator was released.

Love, meanwhile, had broken down from drug problems. Lee revived the band several times - so in 1992 the Arthur Lee & Love LP Five String Serenade was created with the title song of the same name, which was also recorded a year later by Mazzy Star . After that he worked solo again. In 1996, he began serving an eight-year prison sentence for illicit gun possession; in December 2001 he was released early and began performing again.

Arthur Lee died on August 3, 2006 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis to leukemia .

This and that

In 1997 the band Make-Up released the title Free Arthur Lee, in 1998 Hopkirk & Lee released a song of the same name. The title was also used as a slogan on T-shirts. In 2003 the band released The Dachshund 5 , the album included the title Arthur Lee, Belmondo, Du & Ich.
