Ramachandra Guha ( Hindi रामचंद्र गुहा ; born April 29, 1958 in Dehradun ) is an Indian journalist and historian .

Life

Guha attended The Doon School and graduated from St. Stephen's College in Delhi in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and an MA from the Delhi School of Economics at the University of Delhi. He completed his fellowship at the Indian Institute of Management Kolkata with a doctorate in social history from.

Guha has worked in a number of Indian, American and other international research institutions as a fellow, visiting researcher and visiting lecturer and was also a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in 1994 . In the academic year 2011–2012 he was visiting professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science .

Guha writes articles for various newspapers, such as The Telegraph (Calcutta) and the Hindustan Times , whose translations also appear in the newspapers Dainik Bhaskar, Prajavani and Andhra Jyothy, and for the magazines Outlook and The Caravan . Between 1997 and 2009 he wrote a bi-weekly column for the daily newspaper The Hindu .

In 2007, Guha published the study India after Gandhi , which was also translated into Hindi . In 2013, the book Gandhi Before India about Gandhi's time in South Africa followed, among his studies of contemporary history .

With Arundhati Roy , who advocates the construction of the Sardar-Sarovar dam , he is in a dispute, but he supports the affected population and the civil rights activist Medha Patkar .

Guha received the Padma Bhushan in 2009 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2011 . In 2014 he received an honorary doctorate from Yale University . He lives in Bangalore and has two children with Sujata Keshavan .
