Roorkee ( Hindi : रूड़की Ruṛkī [ ˈruɽki ]) is a city with about 120,000 inhabitants in the northern part of Doab in the Indian state of Uttarakhand .

Roorkee lies at an altitude of approx. 268 m above sea level. d. M. almost 180 km north of Delhi in the Haridwar district between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers . The Ganges Canal runs through the city in a north-south direction. The climate in Rourkee is often humid and rainy.

The Hindi and Urdu speaking population is made up of about 73% Hindus and just under 24% Muslims ; Jains , Christians , Sikhs , Buddhists and others are numerically small minorities . As is customary in censuses in northern India, the male population is about 12% higher than the female.
economy
The fertile landscape of the Doab has been cultivated since ancient times. Roorkee itself serves as a center for crafts, trade and services of all kinds; the city is home to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), one of seven of these elite universities nationwide, which emerged from the University of Roorkee .
history
Before the construction of the Ganges Canal began, Rourkee was just a village with perhaps 1,000 inhabitants. A bridge over the canal, which still exists today, was built here, which promoted the later growth of population and economy.
