William Willcocks
Sir William Willcocks (born September 27, 1852 in India, † July 28, 1932 in Cairo ) was a British civil engineer . He is known as the builder of the first Aswan dam .
Life
He completed his civil engineering studies at Thomason College in Roorkee in 1872 and first worked for British Rail India. From 1883 on he worked as general director for storage tanks for the Egyptian Ministry of Public Works. In this position, he planned the construction of the first Aswan dam and the Asyut dam in 1896 , which were built between 1898 and 1902.
In recognition of his achievements, he was knighted on December 6, 1902 as Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG).
