The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi , the capital of India , was built in 1982 on behalf of the Indian government. It is named after Jawaharlal Nehru , the first Prime Minister of India. The large multi-purpose sports stadium is used for soccer and other sports such as cricket or athletics. There are also concerts and other major events.

The arena offered 78,000 people; at concerts there were even up to 130,000 spectators. After the Yuba Bharati Krirangan and Ranji Stadium , it is the third largest stadium in India. The National Olympic Committee of India is based in the sports facility.

The stadium was built for the 9th Asian Games in 1982. It was the second time that the games were hosted in the Indian capital. The first Asian Games were held there as early as 1951. In 2010, the 19th Commonwealth Games were held in New Delhi from October 3rd to 14th .

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as athletics , weightlifting and bowls . For the occasion, the arena was renovated and the capacity reduced to 60,000. The work was completed in July 2010.

The stadium is of a 53,800 square meter tent roof of a PTFE - membrane spanning. The roof spans an area 340 meters long and 290 meters wide, has a large hole in the middle (roof depth of 70 meters) and is held in place by steel girders .
