The Indian Super League (officially Hero Indian Super League , short ISL ) is a professional football competition in India .

The ISL was founded in 2013 to make football more attractive in India. It started playing for the first time in 2014 and is the highest league in the country alongside the I-League . A total of eight teams will take part. The first season started in October 2014 and ends in December of the same year.

The ISL is strongly based on the Indian Premier League and Major League Soccer in the USA. There will be no promotion and relegation system and the teams are set up as sports franchises .

history

Salt Lake Stadium during a Bayern Munich game

On December 9, 2010, the Indian Football Association, the All India Football Federation (AIFF for short), signed a sponsorship agreement with the Indian group Reliance Industries and the International Management Group from the USA. The contract gave both companies comprehensive rights for sponsorship, advertising, franchising and media presence for a soccer league in India. The contract came about because the previous sponsorship contract with the company Zee Sports had expired in October 2010. A league was to be created that would function on the model of the Indian Premier League cricket league. This led to unrest in the I-League, as it became known that the Reliance-IMG is planning to redesign the I-League accordingly.

On April 25, 2011, a first version of a league, modeled on the IPL and the MLS, was created. The Indian Football Association, which represents and administers the sport of football in West Bengal , founded the Bengal Premier League Soccer . Six franchises played in this league in the first season. International players such as Fabio Cannavaro , Robbie Fowler , Hernán Crespo and Robert Pirès were signed . In 2013, however, the league had to be stopped for financial reasons.

After the end of the Bengal Premier League Soccer, the AIFF wanted to pursue the idea of a soccer league for 2014. This time it should be played out across the country. Those in charge of the I-League continued to speak out against it and founded the Indian Professional Football Clubs Association. Furthermore, they announced no players to be given to IMG-Reliance and no players who were already under contract there. That dispute was settled in August 2013.

The Indian Super League was officially founded and presented on October 21, 2013 by IMG-Reliance, STAR Sports and the AIFF. First, the league should be played from January 2014 to March 2014, this was postponed to September / October 2014. The first international player with Louis Saha was signed in October 2013 .

The first franchises were created by the end of 2013. This met with great interest from companies, Bollywood actors, IPL officials and other associations. The application for a football team lasted until March 2014. However, it was not the financial resources of the franchisees that were important, but rather that the new teams could fall back on a stadium.

The teams were presented at the beginning of April 2014. They come from the cities or states of Chennai , New Delhi , Goa , Guwahati , Kochi , Calcutta , Mumbai and Pune . Former cricket player Sachin Tendulkar was awarded the Kochi franchise. Another cricketer , Sourav Ganguly , won the contract for Kolkata along with Indian businessmen and the Spanish football club Atlético Madrid . Bollywood stars John Abraham , Ranbir Kapoor and Salman Khan won the contracts for Guwahati, Mumbai and Pune. The franchises from Bangalore and Delhi were taken over by companies. The team from Goa is a cooperation between the company Videocon Industries Limited and the I-League teams Dempo SC and Salgaocar FC .

The first team resulting from the franchise surcharges was Atlético de Kolkata , which was founded on May 7, 2014. With Antonio López Habas , the franchise from Calcutta also represents the league's first coaching commitment. With the former Spanish international Luis García an international player has also been signed for Atlético. The other franchises followed with the formation of their teams.

On July 22, 2014, players were selected for the teams of the Indian Super League by means of a draft process. Among them were the Indian internationals Subrata Pal , Syed Nabi and Mehtab Hossain . The team from Bangalore resigned on August 24, 2014 and was replaced a short time later by a team from Chennai.

The first season started on October 12, 2014 and ended on December 20, 2014. Atlético de Kolkata won the final 1-0 against Kerala Blasters FC .

The second season began on October 3, 2015 and ended on December 20, 2015 with the final match between Chennaiyin FC and FC Goa , which lost 3-2.

For the 2017/18 season, the number of participants was increased to ten teams by the two new clubs Bengaluru FC and Jamshedpur FC . Chennaiyin FC became champions for the second time , making them the sole record holder.

Competition format

The Indian Super League Regular Season takes place in October / November. The subsequent play-offs will take place in November / December. In the regular season, each team will play against each other twice in a home and return game. The four best teams qualify for the play-offs. The semi-finals will be played in a two-legged manner. The final will only be played in one game.

The squads of the Indian Super League are subject to conditions. Each team must have a so-called marquee player, a player with an international background. There must also be seven foreign players in the team. Of these seven players, only two can be signed directly by the franchise, the remaining five are drawn via a specific draft. In addition, each team needs 14 Indian players, four of whom must come from the city in which the team is based.
